Babies.  Aren’t they sweet?  We have several of these new sweet family members that have been born recently and we are having a dedication service.  What is a dedication service and why do we do it?

“For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me the petition that I made to Him.  So I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord”                        1 Samuel 1:27-28

This pledge of Hannah upon the birth of her son, Samuel, is such a testimony of her continued trust and God’s faithfulness.  After years of asking God to give her a child, she and her husband were finally able to have a baby.  In gratitude and devotion, Hannah dedicated Samuel to God’s service, and when he was weaned, she took him to the tabernacle to live in service to God.

Here at Longview Christian Church, we love babies and children and believe they are truly a gift from God! Just as Hannah dedicated Samuel, we use that example as the basis of our Baby/Child Dedications. We want to give parents an opportunity to publicly express their commitment to lead and nurture their child into a relationship with Christ and service to God.   And while we don’t encourage parents to bring their children to the building and leave them with us to live, we do acknowledge that this body of believers plays a role in the spiritual development of your child.

A Baby Dedication, at first glance, may seem like a sweet and fun event in which to take part and show off children.  It is sweet and allows the LCC body to see (and hear!) all those precious children within the context of their family.  But it is a time for parents to affirm their responsibility as leaders of their home and vow to provide a faith-filled and God-honoring home in which to raise their child.

On the flip-side of that commitment is the affirmation of the LCC body to come alongside parents to pray for, encourage, and help them as they strive to raise their children in the Lord.  On a personal note, there have been so many in our LCC body that have journeyed with my family as our kids have walked through the various stages of childhood into adulthood.  Having a group of godly friends, family, and mentors has been an incredible gift not taken lightly!

Our next Baby Dedication is October 4.  Join us as we welcome our newest little ones and partner with their families as they endeavor to grow their children in the Lord.
