Where’s The Kaboom?
When I was a kid I loved watching Bugs Bunny cartoons! In fact, I still laugh when I remember some of the scenes from those classics. One such memory involves a strange little character from Mars named “Marvin the Martian.” This little guy had great aspirations of destroying the earth with his “Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator”, which looked more like a firecracker than a planet destroying bomb! Bugs Bunny always seemed to thwart Marvin’s attempts by simply snuffing out the fuse. The Martian would light the fuse and wait with his eyes closed and ears covered. After a few seconds of silence, he would utter with frustration the classic line, “Where’s the kaboom? There was supposed to be an earth shattering kaboom!”
In the 1st Century, the Jewish people had been awaiting the arrival of their Messiah for a very long time. They were expecting a King to explode on the scene, setting up his new Kingdom on earth by overthrowing the Roman rule. They were looking for an “earth shattering kaboom”, if you will. But, Jesus didn’t arrive that way did He? The Jewish rulers missed it and therefore wrote Jesus off as a heretic. There was no “kaboom” and because of that, Jesus was dismissed and eventually put to death on the cross.
Jesus came quietly and behind the scenes with no widespread fanfare. Only a few had eyes to see and got a glimpse into the glorious and heavenly reality of the event. The lowly shepherds got a sneak peek as the angels peeled back the curtain of heaven and proclaimed the chorus of celebration announcing Messiah’s arrival.
During his time on earth, Jesus performed many miracles allowing some to see His power displayed. When Jesus went to the cross, the earth shattering reality of the Messiah’s coming was displayed to the whole region. At the moment of Jesus’ death, the curtain in the temple was torn into, a major earthquake occurred, dead men and women rose from the grave, and the sun was hidden (Matthew 27:45-55). Paul writes that Jesus “…disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.” (Colossians 2:15)
Even after Jesus’ resurrection, people still missed the earth shattering reality of the Messiah’s arrival. And millions of people still miss Him today.
I urge you to take time to slow down and remember the amazing and eternal realities of Jesus Christ’s arrival on earth culminating in his death and resurrection. We must remember this earth shattering reality in order for a lost and desperate world around us to know Jesus Christ. The “kaboom” might not be audible to the human ear, but to those who believe in Christ, the internal change may not be earth shattering but it is most certainly heart shattering. In fact, the power of Christ in you by His Spirit recreates our hearts and fills them with hope, peace, joy, and love. May this Christmas season be a time when your changed life exhibits more and more Christ-like qualities enabling you to impact someone around you in an eternal way.
Rest assured, when Christ returns, everyone will hear the “kaboom” and “every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is”. (Romans 14:11). Make it your mission in life to share the good news of Jesus today so on that day, we respond with joy and celebration!
