When Jesus Sat Down… Further Thoughts

What keeps you up at night?

This coming Sunday we will be discussing worry. Worry and anxiety are so prevalent in our culture today. The sheer amount of pressure on parents to provide for their families in light of uncertain economic and social times is enough to send anyone’s head spinning. Not to mention the pressure placed on students today to begin working toward college as soon as they get into high school. We are a culture plagued by worry.

As followers of Christ, we are called in live in a tension, to have a heart set firmly on an eternal kingdom while carrying out life here on earth. However, as most of us know, it is easy to be consumed by what is directly in front of us. The kingdom of our little corner of the universe looks so much larger than the eternal domain that seems so distant.

In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus calls his hearers to the table and asks them if they trust God to provide. He presents examples from nature looking at God’s provision for things that are not created in his image presenting the idea that we matter more to God than birds and flowers.

We are all quick to trust God with our eternal life. What keeps us from trusting him with our terrestrial life? Is he not big enough? Has he not shown himself faithful? Does he not know what you’re going through? Or, maybe we just think I got this. What keeps you up at night? God wants you to rest—trust him.
