Ninos de Mexico - Day 3

by: Stephie and Kris | July 05, 2011

Hola mi amigos! Today we began at Casa Agape. When we arrived, we were greeted by kids, dogs, and chickens. Tawney (she is interning at Ninos for the summer) introduced to the kiddos, and Steve showed us what our duties for the day/week would be. The men, Amy, and Pam got started sealing the roof with red paint and special clothe (we don't fully understand this process) to help prevent leaks. Judy, Margaret, and the two of us began painting two bedrooms holding four girls each. The color was... Princess. Just imagine a bright Pepto Bismal... everywhere. We did not have a chance to spend much time with the kids because all of the houses came to Casa Genesis for a staff meeting. They have these meetings every so often, and the interns are in charge of watching all 60+ kids. After our work day and coca-cola break we headed back, changed and got ready for lunch. This was our third out of four meals for the day, and it is hard for us to imagine that we will not be gaining any weight by the end of the week. By this point, all the kids were back at their houses with the exception of a few boys from Esperanza. Judy and Kristin were able to meet the child they sponsor, Carlos. He was very excited to meet his sponsors, and the 5 year old clung to Judy for quite some time. It was extremely endearing, and no one could stop smiling at this precious moment. Free time was next, and the boys went to Home Depot and grocery shopping with Steve while the girls played cards. That night was the night to eat with the girls at Genesis, and in celebration of July 4th, they surprised us with an American picnic that consisted of hamburgers and hot dogs and FIREWORKS!!! Some of the boys from Esperanza joined us at this point. The fireworks lasted about an hour and a half, and it was anything but organized. It was almost like driving in Mexico City, with fireworks going off in people's faces and fingers getting burned. All in all, it ended up being our favorite Fourth of July... EVER.

We're off to another work day, so we will be updating you more very soon. Thanks for reading!
